U2 Members Bono

BonoBono was born Paul David Hewson on May 10, 1960, in Dublin, Ireland. He was raised in a very spiritual atmosphere, but he came from a mixed marriage: while his father Bob was catholic, his mother Iris was protestant. His mother died when he was only 14 years old. This event, along with the bitter religious conflicts that existed in Ireland had a strong influence on his later songwriting.

As a schoolboy, Paul was the class clown of Mount Temple High School. He joined a group of kids known as "The Lypton Village". Everyone in the group got a nickname, and the name that was given to him was "Bono Vox", after a hearing aid sold in a store in Dublin (because he was never calm). Ironically, "Bono Vox" means "good voice" in Latin.

In 1976, Larry Mullen Jr. placed an ad on a bulletin board at Bono's High School searching for musicians to form a band. Although Bono didn't have much of a voice at the time, his charisma landed him the job of the lead singer. Initially, it was his stage presence that helped the band gain a reputation for live performance.

Bono married his high school sweetheart, Alison "Ali" Stewart, on August 21, 1982. The couple have four children - Jordan (born in 1989), Memphis Eve (born in 1991), Elijah Bob Patricius Guggi Q (born in 1999) and John Abraham (born in 2001). On August 21st, 2001 Paul lost his father after a long battle against cancer.

Vocalist, guitarist and songwriter of U2, Bono has also written songs for (or with), Frank Sinatra, Johnny Cash, Keith Richards, Luciano Pavarotti, Sinead O'Connor, and Howie B among several others. He co-wrote with The Edge the song "She's a Mystery To Me" for Roy Orbison, as well as the theme song for the James Bond movie "Golden Eye" (performed by Tina Turner).

Bono, who is also an activist for Third World debt relief and AIDS awareness in Africa, has been nominated twice for the Nobel Peace Prize (2003 & 2005). He was also named by TIME Magazine as one of their "Persons of the Year" for 2005, along with Bill and Melinda Gates.
